Sex Therapy

  • Specialty

Sex therapy is a specialty or a niche’ in counseling. I utilize my sex therapy training and integrate it into all of my work with clients. It doesn’t have to be the focus of your journey, but we can explore and get curious in a safe space that we co-create together. Whether it be relating to ourselves or each other, our sexuality, pleasure, and intimacy is deeply human and connects us all.

  • EMDR and Sexual Trauma

I provide specialized therapy for individuals who have experienced sexual trauma. My approach is holistic incorporating the biological, social, sexual, spiritual, and psychological parts of each individual. I am certified in EMDR, a specific therapy geared towards helping people heal from past traumatic memories. I combine my sex therapy training, EMDR, Polyvagal Theory, and Somatic body work to help clients process trauma they have experienced.

  • Individual Sex Therapy

Sex therapy can also be the focus of our work together for individual counseling. It is a safe space to explore any challenges you might be facing or exploring your sexual desires. Therapy includes: exploring identities and orientations, pain during sex, performance concerns, trauma, desire discrepancy, out of control sexual behaviors, body image, marginalized sexual identities, and self-confidence.

  • Relationship Sex Therapy

Relationship sex therapy is a framework in which I can help partnerships deepen their fulfillment in sexuality and intimacy. Therapy includes: intimacy and connection, desire discrepancy, communication skills, infidelity or rupture, various relationships structures (ethical non-monogamy, polyamory), and conflict resolution.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • What is EMDR?

When you undergo EMDR, you access memories of a trauma event in very specific ways. Combined with eye movements and guided instructions, accessing those memories helps you reprocess what you remember from the negative event.

That reprocessing helps “repair” the mental injury from that memory. Remembering what happened to you will no longer feel like reliving it, and the related feelings will be much more manageable.

  • Bilateral Stimulation

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) refers to the use of a stimulus that is presented to both sides of the body.

Bilateral stimulation is thought to work in EMDR by activating both sides of the brain which allows for the processing of memories, emotions, and incidents that are stuck in the nervous system. When we experience trauma, our brains can get "stuck" on that event and it can feel like we're reliving it over and over again. Bilateral stimulation is thought to help "unstick" those memories so that they can be processed and resolved in a more adaptive way.

  • What Does it Treat?

EMDR can look very different from traditional talk therapy. I work to integrate talk therapy processing and EMDR together. It is considered the “gold standard” treatment for traumatic episodes and PTSD. Evidence shows it is also effective in the treatment of: phobias, philias, addiction, grief and loss, attachment disorders, depression, anxiety, etc.

  • Note:

I currently only provide EMDR to individual clients. I do not provide EMDR for couples sessions.
